What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a less invasive form of dermabrasion. It’s a superficial exfoliating treatment designed to brighten skin by opening up clogged pores and removing the dead skin cells that contribute to a dulled appearance. It can also effectively improve mild cases of acne. By clearing away dead skin cells, microdermabrasion creates smoother, healthier skin in just 30 minutes.

The Treatment Experience

What to Expect

Your microdermabrasion procedure will be performed on an outpatient basis in the comfort of Dr. Moran’s Nashville area office. In most cases, it is done without anesthesia and does not require any special preparations before your appointment.

To begin, you will sit in a comfortable, reclining chair while we cleanse your face of makeup and oil. From there, we’ll use a handheld device with an abrasive surface to exfoliate the thick outer layer of your skin. Once the treatment is complete, you may experience some tenderness, swelling, and redness for a few hours.

Results + Maintenance

Your treated skin will feel firmer, softer, and more youthful immediately after your first session. These effects will continue to improve over the next few weeks, as your body produces fresh collagen in response to the procedure.

Most of our Nashville patients return for maintenance sessions every six to twelve weeks to preserve their new glow. To prolong your microdermabrasion results, Dr. Moran recommends minimizing sun exposure, applying a high-quality moisturizer daily, and staying hydrated.

Microdermabrasion vs Chemical Peel

If you are considering surface repairs on your face, you may be choosing between a chemical peel and microdermabrasion. A chemical peel uses a caustic solution to remove the affected outer layers of your skin, while microdermabrasion uses a surgical instrument to accomplish the same goal. Depending on your unique needs, Dr. Moran may perform just one of these treatment options, or she may combine the two for a comprehensive transformation.
